Moments Easily Missed highlights those subtle moments that happen between or beyond the dialogue — those moments you can easily miss if you don’t look closely enough.
Why Hershey?
This one is from episode 1×12 Islands, Part 2. Shaun made the decision to move to Hershey to go with Lea and has asked Dr. Melendez for a letter of recommendation. Glassman is hesitant to sign off on it, because he doesn’t want Shaun to leave. In this scene, Glassman seeks out Shaun to hand him the signed letter.
I really can’t praise Freddie Highmore enough for his portrayal of Shaun Murphy. Do you see what he did there when Dr. Glassman addresses him?
Shaun was so engrossed in watching his patient’s vital signs on the monitor that he didn’t notice Glassman approaching, even though Glassman wasn’t being covert or quiet about it. Shaun jumps a little when Glassman verbally addresses him.
This is absolutely consistent with earlier established behaviours of Shaun’s: “I get distracted when I’m alone, that’s why I miss my bus sometimes. Dr. Glassman thinks I’d do the same thing driving. He’s probably right.” (1×11 Islands, Part 1) And it’s amazing that we see it play out here in such a subtle moment.
